  1.  XYZ Plant roots are hung in the air and misted with a spray of nutrient-mix water, providing effective areation.

  2. Deep Water Film Technique Plant roots are hung into a reservoir of nutrient-mix water, and with an air pump providing Oxygen flow. 

  3.  Drip A network of small tubes delivers pumped nutrient-mix water to the base of each plant.

  4. Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain) At certain intervals Plant containers are flooded with nutrient-mix water from a reservoir and then allowed to drain, this provides water/nutrients and air to the roots.

  5.  Nutrient Film Technique Plants roots are positioned in channels where a thin film of nutrient-mix water continuously flows over them.

  6.  Wick System A wick draws nutrient-mixed water from a reservoir up into the growing container holding the plant's roots.

As the nutrients drain out they leave the roots moistened with the water nutrient-mix, but they also draw in the Oxygen into the gaps in the Grow Support, and Oxygenate the air around the roots as well. Very productive style of Hydroponic system.

Key Elements to a Wick System

The Nutrient-Mix water is stored in a reservoir. The water feeds down a tube by virtue of gravity through to a Float Valve that mediates a water level in the plastic channel holding the plants. And Wicks up supplying nutrients to the plants.

The design of Wick System depends on the delivery of the system. Whether through Net Cups/ Spikes with Wicks in them. The Nutrient Water-Mix flows up the Wick and Grow Support. The latter often is a Coco Perlite substrate. Although Soil can be used with Peat moss there are other Wick System methods one can use. In this system one can use Autofill Float Valve designs. This is the case with the large Float Box Wick design.

  1. Root Initial Grow-Support Cost
  2. Power is a passive or something you require above all else.
  3. Maintenance are you around all the time.
  4. Apply the system relevant to your situation and then implement them for the plants you want to grow.

Key Elements to Herbs in a Channel system

Herbs are a perennial and so will be suited to a more permanent hydroponic system structure. In and NFT they can become unwieldy as they do so well within that system. Unless one is growing them to a certain size and removing them on, this can work. If one is using it as a home garden, they are better suited to a Rain Gutter Grow, Dutch Bucket System or a Flood and Drain (Ebb and Flow) system for managing the extensive roots growth.

The use of Grow-Support like Coco and Perlite can be expensive at scale.. where a squandering of resources if one used such for Leafy Green Vegetables.

Key Elements to the Kratky System

Kratky or variations such as Floating Raft system, rely on the water to give the oxygen to the plants. This is better in colder or cooler environments as colder water has a higher oxygen content allowing oxygen to dissolve more readily into it. Plants are held in place above a nutrient-mix water. As this is absorbed by the plants roots the roots grow down further as the water level drops and oxygen is supplied to the roots in the air gap between the nutrient-mix water and the plants. This type of Hydroponic systems lends itself well to plants that require a good Grow Support structure for roots. So where one isn't going to add additional support to your plant, Ebb and Flow (Flood and Drain) can be a really simple way of providing that additional support to hold itself up. In turn, they are good at bio-filtering to convert into more nutrients for the plants. However, the effort required to set up, as well as the space taken up by this system really lends itself to the High-Value plants using them. In the end it's a multi-system approach. And for a balance source of fruits and vegetables they are all worth utilising. One could say a NFT is the most effective, but then it doesn't support a Fruiting plants like a Ebb and Flow or Dutch Bucket System would support better. They are easier to manage in these systems rather than NFT, hold, roots growth and explosion of coverage...
